With an average download speed of 17.8Mbps, Reliance Jio continued to dominate in 4G download speeds in October, new data from Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has said. Jio’s download speed, was, however, down from 19.1Mbps which was recorded in September. Mumbai-headquartered Jio was followed by Idea with a speed of 9.1Mbps, which is 0.5Mbps more from the previous-recorded 8.6Mbps by TRAI’s MySpeed portal.
Even as Reliance Jio continued to lead in the 4G download speeds, the telecom giant witnessed a dip of 1.5Mbps in its average download speed in October. It is pertinent to note that the telecom regulatory body is still counting Vodafone and Idea as two separate telecom companies on its MySpeed portal.
According to TRAI’s MySpeed portal, Vodafone was the third telecom major in the list of 4G download speeds in October with an average speed of 8.8Mbps, which is up from the previously recorded 7.9Mbps. Bharti Airtel, notably, has been maintaining an average download speed of 7.5Mbps for two consecutive months.
Meanwhile, Reliance Jio has a subscriber base of more than 40 crore, the company revealed while announcing its earnings for the second quarter in October. Notably, Reliance Jio has recently introduced new postpaid plans to steal some postpaid subscribers from rival Vodafone Idea (VI) and has become the first company to cross the 400 crore subscriber mark in a single country globally.
According to Reliance Jio, its current subscriber base stands at 40.56 crore and it witnessed a 13.96 per cent of year-over-year (YoY) growth in its subscriber base from the 35.59 crore reported during the same period in 2019. The telco has added 73 lakh subscribers in the September quarter which is a significant decline from the 99 lakh new customers added in the previous quarter ending June 30.
